Getting your Business on the Internet

The Internet is a global network of computer databases called websites carrying business information, news, views, glamour, discussion and social and interactive information accessible at the touch of a button. All you need to connect is a computer, a modem and a telephone line. An Internet Service Provider, (called ISP), will provide you with their software to allow free use of the 'net' or 'web'. Most computers already have this software loaded on them.

To set up your own website, (an advert or database) for customers to view your products you need to follow these simple steps:

  • Firstly, you need to register a domain name. This is a web address for people to reach you, just like a postal address or phone number, for example: our domain address is

  • Secondly, you will need to design a web site that will be viewed by your customers when they enter your web address into their Internet browser. This can be very simple and cost effective or as complex as you require, and will depend on what you wish to use the Internet for.

  • Finally, you will need to get your web site hosted. This at its most basic means you are purchasing computer space where your web site will be housed. Enabling people to view your site from anywhere in the world. The amount of space you will need depends on the size and complexity of your web site design.
